16/05/2024When you think of a safari, what pops into your head?
Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones and actually know what they’re like, but for those who never have been on safari, maybe you’re riding on horseback through the tall grass and scrubs in the Serengeti or the Kruger National Park at sunset, or going down the middle of a river in a boat just as a herd of elephants and their calves arrive at the water’s edge for a drink.
Or you’re stood up in the back of one of those pick-ups, marvelling at the sight of a pride of lions playfully lounging about in the late afternoon sun under one of those trees with a flat top, before finding a place to camp and build a small fire.
Whatever you thought of, the one thing it’s definitely going to be is the experience of a lifetime. And Africa seems to be the place if you’re looking for a safari adventure. But it doesn’t have to be.
In fact, you could actually find one much closer to home because right here at Bolton Abbey we’ve got our very own unique safari adventure, and we don’ t say that lightly.
Our Curlew and Endangered Wader Safari offers you a spectacular tour of our moorland stretching over thousands of acres.
A celebration of curlews
Led by our gamekeepers with all their years of experience and knowledge, you’ll get the chance to catch a glimpse of the Curlew, Europe’s largest wading bird known for its long and slightly curved beak and a call which the RSPB describes as “evocative and bubbling”.
But what makes it so special and even extraordinary isn’t just the beautiful landscape with its flora and fauna that you won’t see anywhere else, it’s actually a celebration of our stable and healthy breeding curlew population.
And that’s something we’re quite proud of, when you consider how numbers have fallen almost by half in the UK over the last 25 years, making the Curlew an endangered species like the jaguar.
On your tour, you’ll learn about what has caused the plight of the curlew in the UK and how we are fighting back to preserve not just the habitat of these wonderful birds but also the habitats of other birds you’re likely to encounter such as the peewits, golden plover, merlins, red kite and snipe.
Your Out of Africa Experience
And to give this an exclusive feel, whether you decide to book the safari for yourself, or want to go with someone, you’ll be just one of three guests maximum travelling in one of our estate vehicles taking in the sights and sounds across the moorlands as part of a private convoy that includes two similar sized groups.
And you thought you had to go all the way to Africa for a safari!
Book your ticket now for an experience that only a few can take advantage of.
So get your binoculars ready and dig out your safari clothes. It’s literally going to be your “Out of Africa” experience.
