Is it just us…but don’t you think it’s ironic that summer doesn’t actually start until the days get shorter?
There’s probably some plausible simple reason. There always is. But it doesn’t really matter, because now that summer’s back make hay while the sun shines with a day out at Bolton Abbey. And even if it doesn’t shine, that’s okay too. You’ll still find enough to explore, see and do when you visit us.
Here’s a flavour of what we’ve got coming up for you.
Solstice Saunter
Fancy a bit of a run through some stunning countryside for a great cause on the longest day of the year? Then this might be right up your street.
We’re once again hosting our popular annual Solstice Saunter, a five mile run along our picturesque riverside and woodland paths, in aid of the Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. But be quick if you want book your place.
While there is a fee for taking part, admission to the estate is free and you’ll get a bespoke medal and a goody bag.

Get ready, set, go! Marking the start of our summer season at Bolton Abbey, the Solstice Saunter returns on the longest day of the year
How does a double dose of outdoor theatre grab you?
If your joints aren’t quite what they used to be and you just want to chill, how would a bit of theatre do you? Sat outdoors with the priory ruins as your backdrop, take your seat for two – yes, count them two – outdoor productions over the summer.
First the Merry Wives of Windsor is a story of deceit and revenge suitable for all ages from the best playwright in the business William Shakespeare.
Then, just as good but appealing more to a younger audience, the Wind in the Willows presents a classic tale from the riverbank that’s sure to leave you with a warm glow. Tickets are now available.
Mile of merry mischief
Step right this way if you’ve got kids who love a sense of adventure. The Welly Walk is a mile of merry mischief for those with endless bags of energy. See them pit their wits scrambling up nets, coming down slides and just generally putting their balance to the test.

How’s your balance? Just one of many challenges along our Welly Walk, now open throughout the summer
Word of warning though. As the name suggests, it can get a little muddy, so come prepared with a spare set of clothes just in case especially after any rain. You can thank us later. But if that’s not quite what you’re looking for, why not take your child on a different kind of adventure on our Family Cycle Zone.
Cycling is such an important life skill for children but what if you can’t find a safe place to cycle? If that’s you, we’ve got an idea. And we think you’re going to like it because we’ve mimicked the kinds of hazards they might face in the real world within the confines of a lush green field using roads that cut through grass and traffic signs that help navigate their way round.

All clicking into gear, these children are making the most of their experience in our family cycle zone
Shiver me timbers
Did you ever dream of life as a pirate on the high seas, listening to those bedtime stories? Only, we’ve got our own pirate ship right here during the summer holidays, back on terra firma by the banks of the river.
So unleash those little rebels of yours and let them get to work on deck, causing mayhem on the pirates’ pole, the ship’s wheel and slide. And if they like making sandcastles, make sure you bring a bucket and spade.
Away from the busy life of a pirate, we know it’s good to find a bit of headspace with a walk in nature. With about 80 miles of footpaths sprawled out over different landscapes, what we can guarantee is variety.
Whether you’re coming here on your own or with others, we are proud to say we have trails for everyone. But as a starting point, we’d certainly recommend the ones that run by the river because they’re also accessible to those with mobility issues. To find out more, please look at our interactive map. It’s packed with lots of useful information to plan your visit.
Anyone for a cuppa?
Yes, please. Not too strong with a dash of milk if you don’t mind. But seriously. It’s one of those things many of us can’t resist while we’re out and about, let’s be honest.

Back from the high seas, looking none the worse for wear, our pirate shop is always a popular attraction
And just maybe you’re the type who loves nothing better than a catch up with friends or family over a scone, or something more decadent like an afternoon tea. To help you decide, check out our places to eat.
Pass me the sausage rolls, would you?
But if you love a few nibbles and a side salad on a paper plate, then why not enjoy great company with a picnic instead? Just bring a rug and find a place to plonk yourselves. Picnic benches are also available. Oh, and remember to bring that picnic!
If you want us to make one for you, just contact the Devonshire Arms. So, what are you waiting for? Come rain or shine, spend your quality time with us at Bolton Abbey this summer.
